Green Dorothy of Worsley Old Hall

Also known as: Green Dorothy

Worsley Old Hall, Walkden Road, Worsley

Undated; hall dates from the 16th or early 17th century

Worsley Old Hall is a Grade II listed building in Worsley, now a public house and restaurant. The present house dates from the sixteenth or early seventeenth century, was originally timber framed and was later rebuilt in brick, remodelled in the eighteenth century and extended.

Its ghost is Green Dorothy. Greater Manchester ghost listings describe her as lime coloured and say she is seen repeating the moment of her death, falling down the staircase and breaking her neck on the last step. One listing places her in the Victorian period, but that comes with no name, no source and no date, and it should not be relied on.

The story is a classic residual haunting in outline, with a colour as the single distinctive detail. Green ladies are a recurring type of English ghost and are sometimes linked to a family emblem or to a poisoning rumour, though nothing of that kind is recorded here. There are no named witnesses in the material found, so the account is tagged as traditional. The building is open to the public as a pub.

Open as a pub and restaurant.
