Abney Hall is a Grade II* listed Victorian house on Manchester Road in Cheadle, built between 1842 and 1847 and associated with the Watts family. Agatha Christie, whose sister married into the family, stayed there often and used the house as a model for settings in several books. It later became a civic building and now houses offices in a public park.
A Greater Manchester directory records an odd 1998 report from the hall. A group of students said they were attacked by a dwarf like alien wearing martial arts clothing, and that it seemed to be trying to drain their life force. The entry gives no names, no month, no count of how many were involved, and no sign that it was investigated.
This is a very thin single report, and the entry itself offers no explanation. It is nothing like the ghost stories the hall attracted in other years. It is kept as a strange entity encounter because of the combination of a historic building, a student group and a very particular description. The grounds are a public park; the hall itself is used as offices.
