The Chanting Monk of the Orange Tree

The Orange Tree, Albert Place, Hale, Altrincham

Undated; reported from the pub's later history

The Orange Tree stands in Albert Place in Hale, a short way from Altrincham. A Greater Manchester ghost directory records a cluster of hauntings there without dates or witnesses.

In the basement a monk is said to chant, a sound often reported in cellars of old buildings, whether or not a religious house stood on the site. Upstairs a ghostly woman roams one room, and the same listing mentions a ghostly couple in the bar area. The listing describes the pub as Victorian in origin.

Nothing in the material found explains the monk, and no monastic site has been identified at the pub. The story is kept as traditional pub lore rather than a documented case, with the three entities simply listed as reported. The building is a working pub and open to customers.
