Hopton Castle Massacre Ghosts

Hopton Castle, near Craven Arms

Hopton Castle, a small fortified manor halfway between Craven Arms and Knighton, was the site of a genuine and thoroughly well-documented Civil War atrocity. In March 1644, a Parliamentarian garrison of around thirty men under Samuel More held the castle for three full weeks against a besieging Royalist force roughly fifteen times its own size, commanded by Sir Michael Woodhouse. When the defenders finally negotiated surrender in exchange for their lives, an agreement any soldier of the period would have expected to be honoured, the Royalists broke that agreement outright: the entire garrison was bound back to back and killed where they stood, their bodies afterward thrown into the castle's own moat.

The haunting that has grown up around the ruins since draws directly and unmistakably on this real, documented history. Visitors and investigators report the ghosts of the murdered garrison alongside those of the Royalist soldiers who also died during the siege itself, joined by a young widow named in some tellings as Elizabeth Mayrick, said to haunt the site still, crying for a lover killed in the massacre that followed the broken surrender.

On moonlit nights, the original surrender and subsequent killing are said to replay themselves as a silent spectral re-enactment, and witnesses have separately reported a phenomenon known locally as the Hopton sigh, a disembodied exhalation and breathing sound with no visible source anywhere nearby to explain it. Few Shropshire hauntings recorded throughout this collection are anchored this firmly and this directly to a genuinely documented historical event, Hopton Castle's own ghosts drawing their power not from vague tradition but from a real, well-recorded seventeenth-century war crime.

The ruins are in the care of a preservation trust with public access.
