The Horse & Groom

Eign Street, Hereford

Among the handful of haunted pubs collected in Hereford's own ghost-walk literature, the Horse & Groom on Eign Street stands out considerably more for the distinctive character of its story than for any genuine depth of detail behind it. Regulars describe what is usually called simply a cheeky ghost, a presence whose entire reported activity is limited to unwanted, inappropriate touching of women in the bar, always attributed by those affected to an unseen presence rather than to any living patron who might actually be responsible.

No name, no date, and no originating event of any kind is given for the story anywhere it happens to be recorded, which leaves this particular haunting defined almost entirely by its single, specific, and genuinely uncomfortable behaviour rather than by any developed backstory explaining who the presence might once have been in life.

It is the kind of thin, single-source pub tale that the wider Hereford ghost-walk circuit generally relies on for a bit of colour and local flavour, worth recording here honestly as exactly that, rather than being dressed up with invented detail that the actual source material was never able to provide in the first place.
