The Ibrox Disaster, Stairway 13

Ibrox Stadium

2 January 1971; memorial unveiled January 2001

The Ibrox disaster is the single deadliest tragedy in the history of British football, and unlike most entries in this register, it needs no ghost story or supernatural embellishment to earn its place — the documented facts alone carry more than enough weight. On 2 January 1971, Rangers and Celtic met at Ibrox Park for one of Scottish football's fiercest fixtures, the Old Firm derby, in front of a huge crowd. Late in the match, with Celtic having taken the lead, Rangers striker Colin Stein scored a dramatic injury-time equaliser. Many supporters had already begun leaving the ground via Stairway 13, the stadium's principal exit, when the roar of the crowd reacting to Stein's goal reached them; some turned back and surged upward against the flow of people still descending, and the resulting collision on the steep, densely packed stairway became a catastrophic crush. Sixty-six people died and more than two hundred were injured, most of them young men and boys, some of whom attended together and died within feet of each other.

The scale of the tragedy prompted major, lasting changes to stadium safety regulation across British football, part of a hard-won legacy that runs through later disasters and reforms right up to the modern all-seater stadium standard. At Ibrox itself, the dead were formally commemorated three decades later: a memorial unveiled in January 2001, thirty years almost to the day after the disaster, includes a statue of John Greig, Rangers' captain on the day, created by the sculptor Andy Scott, standing as a permanent marker at the ground for supporters who still gather there every January to remember the 66 men and boys who did not come home from a football match.

Ibrox Stadium is a working football ground; the memorial is visible from outside the stadium on match days and during organised tours.
