The Abbot's Bell on the Inchcape Rock

Bell Rock (Inchcape Rock), off Arbroath

Legend; set in the fourteenth century; poem 1802

Wikipedia frames the bell story as legend, and the version with the pirate was fixed in popular memory by Southey's poem, in which the pirate is called Sir Ralph the Rover. The poem is a work of fiction based on an older tradition.

The reef is about 11 miles off the coast, and the Bell Rock Lighthouse now stands on it.
