Inverkip was then the parish church for the people of Greenock and Gourock, so the cases involved most of the Inverclyde shoreline. Marie Lamont's trial in 1662 is the best known episode. Others were named in her confession, and the Privy Council commissions of the 1660s ordered further trials.
The cases are in the Privy Council records and are covered by the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft. This entry summarises the period rather than a single event.
