Hauntings

The Haunted Beard Gate, Islay

Cachlaidh na Feusaig, Islay

Recorded 1902

In the first, a man saw an indistinct object come toward him with its mouth wide open, and his large Newfoundland dog rushed between his legs and fought it. He ran home, and in the morning the dog came without hair on its body and died soon after. In the second, Ewen MacCorkindale, returning from Ballygrant market, was teased about the old man who haunted the dell and proposed the health of the old man and let the old woman go to the dogs. At the spot two apparitions, an old man and old woman, met him. The old woman tried to attack him but the old man kept her off, and the same scene was repeated afterwards.
