The ghosts of God's Providence House

God's Providence House, St Thomas' Square, Newport

House dated 1701; sightings undated

The Grade II* listed house in St Thomas' Square bears the inscription "God's Providence is my inheritance, 1701". Local tradition says that in the plague it was the only house in the town in which nobody died. Red Funnel adds that it was built in 1524, burned in 1699, and was rebuilt using timbers from a wrecked captain's boat.

Red Funnel says the house includes the ghost of a girl on the first floor. No more detail, witness or date is given.

The building history is sourced, but the ghost is given in one short tourism line with no witness or date, so the entry is kept as a thin local tradition.

Operates as a cafe or restaurant; check current use.
