The black dog of Rookley

Also known as: Black Shuck of Rookley

Rookley

Undated

Black Shuck is best known from Norfolk and Suffolk, and the name there is thought to derive from Old English "scucca", demon.

Classic.co.uk includes Black Shuck near Rookley in its table of Isle of Wight myths and legends, described only as a spectral dog haunting the countryside.

Nothing else was found to support a Rookley black dog tradition, and the East Anglian name may have been applied by a modern writer to a general black dog report. It is kept as a very thin entry tagged dubious, with the pin at the village.
