The Poltergeist of James Street

Also known as: St James Street poltergeist

St James' Street, St Helier

1970s

St James' Street runs up from the east side of St Helier's old town, a street of terraced houses, small businesses and the former St James' Church. It is an ordinary town street, which is part of the appeal of its ghost story.

Jersey Uncovered, which runs guided ghost walks from the gates of Green Street Cemetery to the Royal Square, names 'the poltergeist of James Street' as one of the tales told on the route. In the form in which it circulates among Jersey ghost listings, the story concerns a widow and her daughter who lived in a house on the street in the 1970s. Things were thrown across the rooms by no visible hand, and the daughter's bedroom had a cold presence in it that both women felt.

That is almost all there is. No names, no house number, no account of how it began or ended, and no newspaper report that we have been able to find. The tour mentions it only in passing, and the fuller description we have seen comes from a listings site we cannot cite. We include it because it is a named part of St Helier's modern ghost-walk repertoire, and because poltergeist cases centred on a household with a teenage girl are one of the most consistent patterns in the whole literature. But it should be treated as a thinly sourced single report.

St James' Street is a public street; the house is not identified.
