The Burned Monk of Howfield Manor

Howfield Manor, Howfield Lane, Chartham Hatch

Manor 12th century; story undated

Howfield Manor, off Howfield Lane near Chartham, is described by Spooky Isles as one of the oldest buildings on its list of haunted Kent hotels, dating to the 12th century. It once belonged to St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury and later served as a country residence.

The story attached to it goes back to its time as a monastic property. A fire trapped a monk inside, and though his brother pulled him from the flames, the rescuer later died of his injuries. Visitors are said to hear chanting in the grounds, and the ghost of a monk is said to drift across the site.

No source is given for the fire story, and no date, so it cannot be tied to a recorded event. It is kept as a tradition reported by a single hotel round-up.
