The Lavender Lady of Dartford Library

Dartford Library, Market Street, Dartford

Reported in the 20th and 21st centuries; library opened 1916

The Lavender Lady is the name given to a ghost reported at Dartford Library on Market Street. Staff and visitors describe a spectral older woman whose arrival is marked by a strong smell of lavender. She is also said to be heard stomping across carpeted floors and moving among the stacks.

According to the Spooky Isles write-up of Dartford, a televised paranormal investigation of the library produced reports of books flying from shelves, unexplained cold spots and a feeling of being watched. Some people who work late claim to hear soft footsteps in empty corridors and to catch the lavender scent when nobody else is there.

The library opened in 1916 and was expanded in 1937 over the site of a former tin works. No identity has been put forward for the Lavender Lady, and the sources found give no named witnesses or dates for individual sightings, so this stays a single-source local tradition. The television investigation is mentioned but not named in the source.
