Charlotte of Larkfield Priory

Larkfield Priory Hotel, London Road, Larkfield

Story undated; guest reports 1980s

Larkfield Priory Hotel is on the London Road at Larkfield, just outside Maidstone. Spooky Isles says the building dates to the late Victorian period, though its name suggests greater antiquity.

The ghost is Charlotte, a servant who fell in love with a groundsman and became pregnant. Gossip and disapproval caused her great stress, she lost her baby and her marriage collapsed, and she took her own life. Guests in the 1980s reported seeing her appear suddenly before them, so clearly that some ran away in fright.

The source gives no surnames, dates for Charlotte's life, or document for her story, so the account is traditional. The 1980s reports are the only dated element. This entry deals with suicide briefly and factually.
