Les Grands Moulins, known in English as the King's Mills, is a village in the Castel parish around the old water mills in the valley running inland from Vazon. It has more than its share of lore: the witch Marie Pipet was said to have sent its millstones spinning, and the haunted rock of La Roque où le Coq Chante stood on the road up to Le Mont Saint.
Mrs Marquand's story is short and domestic. She wanted her clothes to go to her sister. Her widower kept them, perhaps meaning to sell them or simply putting it off, and each night there was knocking at his door. The night it came to a head the whole village heard it. Windows opened along the street and the neighbours listened as a woman's voice outside asked: "John, how much longer will you make me suffer? Give my clothes to my sister Judy." The clothes went to Judith the next day, and the knocking stopped.
Carey placed it alongside a near-identical story of a Mrs Guille who required her husband to buy and give out clothes to the poor every year. He neglected it, she visited him one night to say she would come every night until he did, and he kept up the gift until he died. Both belong to the belief that the dead return when a dying wish is ignored. The Marquand house is not identified, so the map marks the village.
