The Pale Rider to Kirkmichael

Parish of Cromarty, to Kirkmichael burying ground

Traditional; told by Miller in 1835

The pale horse and its rider echo the biblical figure of Death, while the race to the churchyard before midnight is a folk detail about a soul's allowed time. Miller leaves the woman's name out.
