Hauntings

The grey lady and hooded figures of St Mary de Castro

Also known as: St Mary de Castro ghosts; Turret Gateway ghosts

St Mary de Castro church and Turret Gateway, Castle View, Leicester

Church 12th century; sightings undated

Spooky Leicester's ghost tour says St Mary de Castro was founded in the 12th century as the castle's royal chapel and that the Turret Gateway dates from 1423 and saw fierce fighting in the Civil War. The sightings listed are a spectral Lady in Grey crossing the courtyard and hooded, monk-like figures that fade into the gateway arch. It adds that locals avoid the place at night, saying it feels wrong after dark.

The church sits next to Leicester Castle, which already has its own haunting records, so the area has a layered set of ghost stories. The tour page does not name witnesses or date any sighting, so these figures are reputation only.

The identity of the Lady in Grey is not suggested, and the monks are generic. It is recorded as a single-source report.
