Llangeitho is a village in the upper Aeron valley of Ceredigion, best known as the home of the eighteenth century Methodist preacher Daniel Rowland. In 1895 its eisteddfod had a competition for an essay on ghosts, and T. Huws Davies entered one called Hanes Ysbrydion, a history of ghosts. The National Library of Wales has quoted one of his stories.
A farmworker had lost a pig and was out searching for it. As he passed a wood, an old man jumped out from among the trees with a lantern in his hand. The worker went towards him, perhaps to ask if he had seen the pig, and the old man vanished on the spot, lantern and all.
The library places the story among its corpse candle accounts, since a light carried by a phantom figure was one of the forms the canwyll corff could take, but the essay extract does not say whether a death followed. It is recorded as a single report from a local collection.
