The Muc-Sheilche of Loch Maree

Loch Maree, Wester Ross

Recorded 1911 and later

Online lists add that the loch is also called Loch na Beiste and that a creature with a hump like an upturned boat was seen, and some link it to the bull sacrifices on Isle Maree. Those claims appear to mix up separate traditions. The upturned boat sighting in Dixon's book belongs to the Loch na Beiste near Mellon Udrigle, not to Loch Maree, and the bull sacrifices were offered to St Maelrubha.

The record is kept as a place-name and dictionary tradition with no sighting data, held at traditional confidence.
