Operation Deepscan, 1987

Whole of Loch Ness (line of boats across the loch)

1987

Adrian Shine speculated, from the size, that some of the contacts might be seals that had entered the loch. The sonar expert Darrell Lowrance, whose company donated units, examined a return showing a large moving object at 180 metres near Urquhart Bay. He said there was something he did not understand, larger than a fish, perhaps a species not yet detected.

The operation is the best known mass sonar sweep of the loch and is still cited by both believers and sceptics. A tree stump resembling the earlier gargoyle head was also filmed during it.
