Hauntings

Matthew Weaving of the River Crane gunpowder mills

Former gunpowder works site, River Crane, Hatton

Explosion 1794; sightings reported recently

The River Crane near Hatton was, according to Spooky Isles, a good escape route for highwaymen fleeing from Hounslow Heath, and the wooded walk is dark even by day. The writer adds that the site of the old gunpowder works there is haunted by a named individual, Matthew Weaving.

Weaving was killed along with a colleague following an explosion in 1794. His ghost stands at the blast wall and stares at passers by, and has been seen quite recently, the article says.

Gunpowder mills along the Crane and Hounslow Heath were real, and explosions were frequent, but the 1794 accident and Weaving's name are given without a source in the article and were not independently checked. The ghost itself is a single modern report.
