Hauntings

Godfrey, the fireman of the old West Ham fire station

Former West Ham Fire Brigade station, Stratford Broadway

Early to late 20th century (undated)

The ghost of an old fireman called Godfrey was supposed to haunt the old fire station in Stratford Broadway next door to West Ham Town Hall, according to a Newham Recorder heritage feature. The paper says the claim was made by witnesses and their relatives and in old letters to the paper.

The main offices of the West Ham Fire Brigade were directly above the firemen's dormitory and were locked at the end of each day. Even so it was often claimed that footsteps could be heard in the night walking around the offices.

When the fire station building became the education offices of the London Borough of Newham, Godfrey was said to carry on entertaining and scaring the staff. No date, surname or sightings are given, so this is a traditional workplace ghost with local backing. The pin is approximate, on Stratford Broadway.

The building has since changed use; check current status.
