Nelson Street once connected Blucher Street and the Lecky Road in Derry. The Derry Journal, summarising Parade of Phantoms, says there was a yarn that on a wintry night a woman lay dying in the street and begged a family living there to take in her child. The family did, but did not treat the child well. It was said that the household soon began to experience inexplicable phenomena such as chilling wailing and objects flying around. The family were also plagued by a series of tragedies.
Some said it was the woman come back from the dead to haunt them for their neglect. Until the house was knocked down in the late 1960s, people used to cross the road rather than walk past it.
No family names are given, and it is told as a moral story about the duty to a dying stranger's child.
