The Merry Monk, Bishop Auckland

George Street, Bishop Auckland

The Merry Monk is a seventeenth-century pub on George Street in Bishop Auckland with a genuinely old building standing behind its modern working trade, including a tunnel said to have once linked the pub's own cellars directly to Auckland Castle nearby, a physical connection that, whatever its actual current state, has clearly fed directly into the pub's wider monastic-themed ghost lore. Numerous customers over the years have reported seeing a robed figure closely resembling a monk somewhere inside the pub, alongside disembodied voices heard at the bar, footsteps echoing through corridors when nobody is actually there, and vaguely seen figures that simply appear and then disappear again without warning.

One particularly recurring detail concerns a small, solemn boy glimpsed crouching quietly in the ladies' toilets, who consistently vanishes the moment anyone actually approaches him or attempts to speak.

None of these individual sightings has ever been independently verified in any formal sense, and the pub's own name plays quite deliberately on its supposed monastic connection to Auckland Castle, but the sheer volume and genuine consistency of reports coming from different customers over an extended period of time has given the Merry Monk a solid local reputation as one of Bishop Auckland's more reliably haunted pubs, whatever the actual truth behind the tunnel, the monk, or the crouching boy in the toilets.
