The Flag Waver of Otterspool

Otterspool railway station site, Liverpool

Said to date from 1951

Spooky Merseyside's article on five haunted places in Liverpool, by Howard Jackson and originally published in January 2013, includes Otterspool. He describes a ghost around the Otterspool rail station that appears waving a red flag, and compares it to Charles Dickens's ghost story The Signalman.

He says the history of the ghost is recent. In 1951, a teenager was saved from being killed by a train, but the rescuer died, and he is said to still be there waving his red flag. Jackson notes there is a fine coastal walk from Otterspool. The station on the Garston and Liverpool line closed in the 1950s, and the site is now part of the Otterspool Promenade area.

The article does not name the rescuer or the teenager, give the date or place of the accident exactly, or cite a witness, and I have not found a newspaper report. It is a short entry in a light-hearted listicle, so treat it as a single report of an unverified tale. The pin is approximate.
