The Phantom Hooves of Monnow Street

Monnow Street, Monmouth

Monnow Street is broad because it was a market street, and it runs straight down to Monnow Bridge, the only surviving medieval bridge in Britain with its gatehouse still standing on it. Horses would have filled it for centuries.

The ghost is a sound rather than a sight. People have reported hearing hooves clattering along the street and turning the corner by Chippenham House, with no horse to be seen. The Great British Ghost Tour notes that the sounds are usually heard in the late afternoon, and more often in autumn. Some locals put it down to a highwayman; others to a distant battle, perhaps from the fighting around Monmouth in the Civil War.

The same source mentions a pair of eerie glaring eyes reported in the street, without saying where or when. Both stories are recorded with no dates or witnesses.
