The Devil's Coach Road

The Devil's Coach Road, below Slieve Beg, Mourne Mountains

Place-name tradition

The Devil's Coach Road is a gouge, a deep cleft, running down from Slieve Beg in the Mournes. According to a Mourne walking blog, locals believed that the devil would come up from the Underworld by this route to cause havoc among them. A 1901 account of Mourne also mentions the cliffs of the Devil's Coach-road above the pass on the Brandy Paths.
