Much Wenlock Guildhall

The Guildhall, Much Wenlock

The Guildhall in Much Wenlock is a genuinely old and well-documented building, a half-timbered structure raised around 1540 that served as a working courtroom and council chamber for the town across several centuries of continuous civic use, and which still stands today over the town's own old market place, supported on its original timber posts exactly as it was originally built. Its long history as a genuine place of judgement, including the trial of lesser offences brought before the town's own local court, has made it a natural target for ghost-hunting groups specifically looking for a building carrying real historical weight behind it.

In January 2017, a team of paranormal investigators carried out a full overnight investigation of the Guildhall and reported what they themselves described as spooky goings-on, though press coverage from the time did not actually detail any specific evidence beyond the simple fact that the investigation itself had taken place.

The building's own many centuries as a working court, with all the associated human drama of trials, sentencing and ordinary public business once conducted within its timber-framed walls, is exactly the kind of layered history that naturally lends itself to a haunted reputation, whether or not any specific individual case can actually be pinned down to explain it in detail.

The Guildhall is open to visitors at advertised times; upper floor accessible by stairs.
