He once lay down for a quiet sleep near a fairy-haunted rock above Drimfin. The rock opened and light poured out at the door. A little man spoke to him in English and invited him in to the ball. Donald fled and did not stop till he reached the houses at Tobermory, two miles off, and said he heard the whizz and rustling of the fairies after him the whole way.
The incident caused a good deal of talk, and Donald and his fright became the subject of a doggerel verse in which the fairy invitation is repeated. Campbell tells it as an amusing local tale, and the drink may be the explanation.
