The Munlochy Clootie Well

Also known as: Tobar Churadain; St Boniface's Well

Clootie Well, Munlochy, Black Isle

Tradition said to be about 1,400 years old; continues today

Rag wells are found across Scotland and Ireland, and the idea goes back to appeals to water spirits and later to a patron saint. Undiscovered Scotland describes the Munlochy well as a weird remnant of a once common tradition. The rule is that rags should be of cloth that rots, and plastic and other modern items left at the site have been a recurring problem.

The 2022 clearance was reported as the work of someone who thought they were cleaning up the site.

The well is beside the A832 and open to visitors, with paths and handrails added in recent years.
