Whistling and Footsteps at Newhailes

Newhailes House, Musselburgh

Undated reports

Visit East Lothian lists Newhailes among its places for ghost stories and gives the phenomena as whistling, ghostly music, footsteps in empty rooms and shadowy figures. Wikipedia describes the house, built from 1686 and bought by the Dalrymples in 1709, as a centre of the Scottish Enlightenment, with a library Samuel Johnson called the most learned drawing room in Europe. It was given to the National Trust for Scotland in 1997.

The reports are general and unattributed. No account gives a date, a room or a witness. Old houses with staff and volunteers often accumulate such tales through retelling, and the page treats them as a reputation, not a case.

Newhailes is a National Trust for Scotland property; house entry is by guided tour, and the grounds are open.
