The picture showed a smooth, curved object with several stacked layers, sitting apparently motionless above the summit of Mynydd Mawr. Shared on social media, it drew the obvious comparisons, and some viewers were convinced it was a craft.
The explanation was weather. Lenticular clouds form when moist air flows over a mountain and sets up standing waves downwind; the cloud forms at the crest of the wave and can hold its position for a long time, often in stacked, saucer-like layers. Snowdonia's high ridges produce them regularly. Reports like this one are a reminder that many "UFO" photographs from mountain areas have a meteorological answer.
