Above Nevern village, on a spur over the valley, are the grassy banks and ditches of Nevern Castle. It was raised by the Normans, taken by the Lord Rhys, and fought over within the family in the twelfth century, and very little masonry is left. Pembrokeshire Beyond, a local website that collects paranormal reports from around the county, lists it as one of the stops on its haunted road trip.
The report it gives is short. A family who had stopped to picnic on the castle site heard screaming that seemed to come from under the ground where they were sitting. Other visitors, the site says, have heard a man crying and sobbing below the earth, which has been put down to dungeons or cellars that have never been excavated. A bearded man in medieval dress is also said to appear and then disappear without trace.
No names, dates or first hand statements are given, and nothing else supports the report. It is included because it belongs to a village with a lot of folklore, and because the idea of voices under a castle mound is an old one, but the evidence is very thin.
