Miners' institutes were the heart of valley towns, paid for by weekly deductions from colliers' wages. The Memo at Newbridge, built as a memorial hall and institute, had a cinema, a ballroom, a library and a bar. It closed and decayed, and was then saved and restored by the community.
According to the Great British Ghost Tour, it has a busy cast of ghosts. There is an usherette, still at work. A figure stands in the cinema balcony. A woman in 1940s dress (the source says "flapper", which would be 1920s) walks towards the ballroom. Shadowy figures are seen on the steps up to the cinema ticket booth. Objects move in the bar, and from dressing rooms that are locked and empty people have heard movement and music.
Down the High Street, the same source records that the Three Horseshoes pub became known in the 1920s for poltergeist activity: kettles boiling on the fire tipped over, pictures moved by themselves and cutlery was seen "dancing". No names or exact dates are given for either building.
