Linenhall Square and Number 74

Linenhall Square (redeveloped), Newry

Recalled by older residents; fire station period within 1877-1977

Linenhall Square in Newry was a busy mix of old houses, a fire station and the local GAA club until the area was redeveloped. It had been the site of Linenhall Barracks, and older residents recall odd happenings there.

One account concerns a small single-storey house between the old fire station and the club. During renovations the family found a hidden basement. The mother later said the house was haunted, and described a small woman who would walk straight through the outside wall, cross the living room in silence and vanish through the bedroom door opposite. Her son once saw the figure of a man standing in the front bedroom and was too shocked to talk about it for years.

The old fire station had been the Officers' Mess of the barracks. According to the Newry Fire Brigade's centenary book, Newry Aflame 1877-1977, firefighters found some rooms 'chilly to say the least' and heard strange night noises, small inexplicable things that you could not put a finger on.

The area has been redeveloped.
