The Newry Canal opened in 1742 as the first summit-level canal in Ireland, linking Newry to Lough Neagh and making the town a busy trading port. It needed lock keepers and maintenance workers, and some of the houses built for them still stand along its banks.
Lough House Number 6 is one such house, now abandoned and decaying. It is said locally to be haunted by a former lough keeper and his wife from the Victorian era. The directory says visual sightings and unexplained sounds have been reported by many witnesses, but admits that no specific details are recorded. The disused Forsythe's Canal nearby is also said to carry a phantom boat and other unexplained presences. Whether these are linked to the keeper and his wife has not been established.
