The Black Dog of Beckingham

All Saints' Church to the Old Trent Road, Beckingham

Traditional, no dated sightings

LeftLion's 2017 guide to ghost hunting in Nottinghamshire describes a spectral black dog with glowing red eyes at Beckingham, in the north of the county near the Lincolnshire border. A fuller version, from a search summary of a local writer, puts him at up to five feet tall with dull red eyes like coal embers.

The route is fixed. He leaves the churchyard of All Saints, goes down Walkeringham Road and Station Street, and leaves the village by the Old Trent Road, heading for the marshy water meadows. Near the old shipyard he turns south along the old course of the river Trent.

Local lore says anyone who blocks his path from church to river does so at their own risk, and that one farmer who met him late at night was so terrified he went insane. A podcast episode title, "The River That Claims Souls", links the dog to the river. The accounts say the story goes back centuries but give no dated sighting, so it is a traditional black dog tale of a familiar churchyard-to-water pattern.

The pin is the church.
