The Chambermaid and Baby of the Old Cock Inn

Old Cock Yard, Halifax

The Old Cock Inn sits down Old Cock Yard, one of several genuinely historic covered yards running off Halifax town centre that still preserve something of the town's own pre-Victorian layout, a real physical survival of an older urban pattern largely swept away elsewhere. Its ghost story centres on a chambermaid and, in most versions of the tale, her own baby, both said to haunt the inn together, though the actual circumstances of their deaths or the story's original source are never spelled out in any real detail anywhere in the accounts that continue to repeat it.

Staff and customers over the years have reported unexplained movements of objects and noises with no obvious cause behind them, the kind of low-level, genuinely undramatic activity typical of many older pub hauntings recorded throughout this collection, rather than anything more overtly dramatic or frightening.

As with several other Halifax pub stories gathered for this record, this one remains genuinely thin on verifiable detail, no names, no dates, no documented incident, and is best treated honestly as a piece of local tavern folklore, exactly the sort of story that accumulates naturally around any building old enough and atmospheric enough to invite it, regardless of whatever actual tragedy, if any, originally inspired it.

The Old Cock Inn is a working public house, open to customers during normal licensing hours.
