The charge against Jonet Rendall is of a type common in Orkney. She was a healer, and the court read her cures as a gift from the Devil, who in her case appeared in an old man's shape, with a grey beard and white clothes. Scholars note how often a folk healer's helper figure was recast as the Devil.
She was convicted, strangled and burned. The sources I checked do not give her home island or farm, so the pin is at Kirkwall, where the trials were held, and is only approximate. Her name appears in Black's 1937 account of Orkney witchcraft and in Wilby's work on cunning folk.
