The Devil's Clawmarks at the Kirk of Lady

Kirk of Lady, near Overbister, Sanday

Undated tradition

The Kirk of Lady is a ruined church on Sanday. In its parapet are a set of parallel grooves, and local tradition says they are the marks of the Devil's claws.

The source gives the name but not the tale that goes with it, and I could not find a fuller version. It is a typical piece of devil lore, where a mark on stone gets an explanation after the fact. The record is included as a recorded local name and not as a full legend.
