The Phantom Monk of Barford Bridge

A6003, Barford Bridge, between Kettering and Corby

Reported sightings from at least 1984 to the present

The single-track stretch of the A6003 near Barford Bridge, between Kettering and Corby, carries a persistent local story of a ghostly monk, thought to be connected directly to a chapel that once served the deserted medieval village of Barford, itself linked historically to the Cistercian house at Pipewell Abbey nearby. In 1984, a police sergeant and, separately, a woman driver both independently reported seeing a bearded man's face appear suddenly in their own rear-view mirrors while passing through the area, two entirely unconnected witnesses describing a strikingly similar experience.

According to the author Marian Pipe, who documented the legend in her book Northamptonshire Ghosts and Legends, some drivers have described the figure actually sitting down beside them in the passenger seat, only to vanish completely further along the road the moment they glance over to look. Others report the monk stepping directly into the roadway near the bridge itself, causing drivers to brake sharply or swerve, genuinely believing they have struck someone, only to find absolutely no one there once they stop to check.

A 2009 vigil conducted by the Northamptonshire Paranormal Investigation Team reported temperature drops and loud banging sounds during their own visit to the site. Locals have also separately described the hooded figure gliding silently across nearby fields at both dusk and dawn, a haunting that has genuinely persisted, in one form or another, from at least 1984 right through to the present day.
