The Flat-Capped Mechanic of Popworld

Church Street, Hartlepool

The venue now trading as Popworld on Hartlepool's town centre entertainment strip has traded under several different names over the years, including a period spent operating as a branch of Yates's Wine Bar. Staff working in the cellar during that particular era reported the recurring presence of a man wearing a flat cap, described in terms consistent with a working mechanic, suggesting the building or the wider site it actually stands on may once have had some genuine connection to vehicle repair or similar working trade, though no specific documented history has actually been found to confirm this particular theory.

The reports themselves are fairly typical of nightclub and bar cellar ghost stories more generally, a consistent visual description repeated independently by different staff members over time, but nothing beyond that basic description in the way of a named identity or any specific individual incident to explain who he actually was.

It is included here as a genuine, still-current piece of Hartlepool town centre ghost lore, rather than as any kind of well-documented historical case, the flat-capped mechanic's own consistent, repeated description across different staff over the years standing as the story's only real evidential weight.
