The Drowned Island off Port Soderick

Also known as: The enchanted isle; Nora Cain and the island

Sea off Port Soderick

Long ago, the story goes, there was an inhabited island off the coast near Port Soderick. Its people offended the magician Finn MacCool, and he punished them by sinking it into the sea and turning them all into blocks of granite.

The spell is not permanent. Once every seven years the island rises to the surface for half an hour. If anyone could put a Bible on it while it was above water, the enchantment would be broken and the island and its people restored.

Moore says that Nora Cain saw it come up. She tried to get a Bible to it, but did not manage it in time and it went down again. In the version he gives, her failure cost both her life and her lover's.

Port Soderick is a small cove reached by road and the coastal path; the island is legendary.
