Hauntings

Wild Darrell counting nails at Ramsbury

Church of the Holy Cross, Ramsbury

William Darrell, died 1589

This tradition is a direct extension of the separately recorded Littlecote House haunting, Darrell's restless spirit here relocated some two miles from his own former home to a parish church, a detail that gives his legend an unusually wide geographical range for a single figure within this register, though no specific witness account or date has been traced for sightings at Ramsbury itself in the sources consulted for this entry.

The specific and oddly mundane detail of counting nails, rather than any more dramatic haunting behaviour, is a distinctive and rather understated variant of the restless-spirit motif, its repetitive, obsessive quality perhaps read within the tradition as a form of penance for the murder attributed to him at Littlecote, condemned to an endless, meaningless task.

The choice of a church door specifically, rather than any other part of the building, may also reflect an older folk association between iron, nails, and protection against malevolent spirits, Darrell's presence at the threshold itself perhaps symbolically marking him as a spirit unable to cross into the consecrated building proper.

The Church of the Holy Cross is an active parish church, generally accessible during daylight hours.
