The Named Ghosts of Ripon Workhouse Museum

Ripon Workhouse Museum, Allhallowgate, Ripon

Ripon Workhouse was built in the nineteenth century as part of the national system introduced under the Poor Law, designed to house the destitute under a regime that was deliberately harsh, on the reasoning that conditions inside should never be more comfortable than the lowest paid work available outside. The building now operates as a museum that tells that history without flinching from its difficulty, using the surviving rooms, including the former casual wards and the workhouse's female block, to give visitors an honest sense of what life inside actually involved.

Over the years, staff and visitors have reported enough distinct paranormal activity that four separate figures have acquired names of their own: Nora, Bernhard, Robert and Stan. None of the sources consulted give a clear account of who these four are meant to have been in life, whether inmates, staff, or simply names attached after the fact to recurring experiences, but the naming itself suggests a body of repeated testimony solid enough that visitors and guides began referring to the same presences consistently rather than describing fresh, unrelated incidents each time.

Reported phenomena extend beyond the four named figures to include dark, shadowy shapes seen going about ordinary daily chores as though the institution were still functioning, children's crying heard from empty rooms, and poltergeist-style disturbances including objects being thrown without visible cause. Visitors passing through the old female block commonly describe a sudden physical unease, and figures have been reported in the former schoolroom. The workhouse's institutional history is thoroughly documented even where the individual ghosts are not, and the building, like its sister site the Prison and Police Museum nearby, was investigated by the television series Most Haunted.
