The Wolf of Badenoch's Game of Chess with the Devil

Ruthven Castle site, now Ruthven Barracks

Legend set in the 1390s

Wikipedia states that the chess game is legend, not history, and says no documentary evidence supports it. The real Alexander Stewart was excommunicated for the Elgin burning and later absolved, and died in 1405. The Ruthven Barracks of today were built in 1719 to 1721 on the old castle site.

The Elgin burning itself is in the Moray area and is only referred to here for context.

Ruthven Barracks is a free access site maintained by Historic Environment Scotland.
