The Salisbury Arms Hotel on Hertford's Fore Street carries two distinct ghost reports. The more striking involves housekeepers working on the first floor one morning who watched a man dressed entirely in black walk down the corridor and turn into a small side room. Assuming him to be a guest who had lost his way, they went to offer assistance, only to find the room completely empty, with no other exit through which he could plausibly have left in the few seconds it took them to follow.
A second, less detailed tradition holds that Room 6 has its own resident ghost, a figure in Cromwellian dress reported by several different staff members over an unspecified period wandering the corridors nearby. No specific identity or historical event has been proposed to explain either apparition, and the two reports are not obviously connected beyond both belonging to the same building.
Both accounts are recorded here as single, undated staff reports rather than documented historical hauntings, consistent with the general pattern of English hotel ghost stories that accumulate around old buildings without ever quite resolving into a specific, checkable historical narrative.
