Ann Walker's Red Room, Shibden Hall

Shibden Hall, Halifax

Shibden Hall dates from the fifteenth century and became famous far beyond Halifax as the home of Anne Lister, the landowner and diarist whose coded journals, decoded only in the twentieth century after decades of being dismissed or ignored, provide one of the most detailed surviving records of a lesbian relationship in early nineteenth-century Britain, a genuinely remarkable historical document later dramatised for a wide audience in the television series Gentleman Jack. Lister's own death in 1840, while travelling abroad, left the hall to her partner Ann Walker, and it is Walker rather than Lister who dominates the hall's ghost stories today, a reversal that gives Shibden's haunting an unusual focus.

In the years following Lister's death, Walker suffered a severe mental health crisis, one made considerably worse by grief, isolation, and the precarious social position of an unmarried woman managing a great estate alone, and she reportedly barricaded herself into what is now known as the red room, where she attempted to take her own life. Her tormented spirit is said to be the most persistently reported presence at Shibden, felt most strongly in that same room where her crisis reached its worst point.

Staff and visitors describe other, less specific phenomena too: tales of a grey lady, an unexplained black shadow seen drifting overhead at dawn, and the recurring smell of pipe smoke in the cellar and tower, attributed to the hall's last private occupant, the antiquarian Dr John Lister, a committed pipe smoker in life whose habit apparently lingers in scent long after his death. Of the hall's several ghosts, Walker's story is unusually well grounded in real, documented biography rather than vague tradition, even though the haunting itself remains, as always, a matter of belief rather than proof.
