Hauntings

Torres Salvatori and Josephine of the Barbican

Also known as: Shirley Valentine's Taverna ghosts

12 New Street, Plymouth Barbican

The specificity of two named figures from apparently quite different periods, an Italian sailor and a Victorian woman, sharing a single Tudor building is unusual within this register, most multi-ghost sites elsewhere in this county recording figures connected by a shared narrative, such as the family hauntings at Berry Pomeroy Castle, rather than two seemingly unrelated individuals from different centuries occupying the same rooms.

The recorded audio evidence, footsteps and rattling plates captured during formal investigations, places this haunting among this register's more methodologically modern entries, closer in evidential character to the CCTV claims attached to the Drum Inn at Cockington than to the purely oral traditions recorded at many of this county's older sites.

New Street's status as one of the best preserved Tudor streetscapes in the Barbican, alongside the separately recorded ice cream parlour haunting at nearby Southside Street, situates Shirley Valentine's within a small cluster of distinct hauntings concentrated in Plymouth's oldest surviving quarter, a density of reported activity local guides and ghost walk operators frequently draw attention to.

The premises operates as a working restaurant, accessible to the public during trading hours.
